HBO to cancel Game of Thrones episode, cancel another title

HBO has announced it will cancel the third season of the popular HBO show Game of Throne.

The news, which comes as Game of the Thrones season three premieres in the U.S. and Canada on Sunday, comes less than 24 hours after HBO announced its latest round of budget cuts, citing the network’s need to continue to invest in the series.

“We’re canceling the third installment of the critically acclaimed Game of The Thrones franchise, Game of Kings,” HBO said in a statement.

In addition, the network has announced plans to end production of new seasons of The Sopranos and Mad Men and to stop production of Game of Hearts, a series that follows the lives of a couple who meet at a local amusement park.

HBO said it will also end production on HBO Films, HBO’s TV division, which includes the premium cable channel and the production of HBO’s popular HBO shows like Game of Cups and HBO Sports.

Last year, HBO said it would begin to phase out production of series like The Wire and The Soprano and the re-launch of the premium HBO show The People vs. OJ Simpson.
